Cyberattack disrupts operations at major US health care network
A cyberattack has impacted the functioning of a major health care nonprofit called Ascension, leading to disruptions in clinical operations. Ascension, which operates 140 hospitals and 40 senior living facilities across 19 states, is currently assessing the extent and duration of the disruption. In response, Ascension has advised its health care clients to temporarily disconnect network connections to mitigate any potential impact. The nonprofit detected unusual activity on its computer systems, prompting an investigation and notification to the appropriate authorities. Ascension is taking steps to ensure patient care continues safely with minimal disruptions. If any sensitive patient data was compromised, those affected will be notified. The incident did not have an immediate response regarding whether it involved ransomware. Ransomware attacks have become increasingly prevalent in the health care industry, causing disruptions and financial losses for providers. An attack in February on a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group resulted in billing disruptions at pharmacies and threatened the viability of some health providers.
